Leather Fringe Jacket LIVE! DIY: March 27, 2020, 6pm CST

For our first project, we will be making a leather fringe jacket inspired by this R13 jacket for Spring I have been crushing hard on. Instead of the $1300+ price tag I have sourced and tested all of the materials that you will need to complete the project for under $100. When it comes to materials, I am looking for the best items to complete the project with a budget in mind. The idea is that you will order all of the supplies before the LIVE! DIY date and will have everything you need to complete the LIVE! Alongside me. It’s going to be so much fun, and the best part is you can do them all in your sweats.

Supply List:
Budget: $100

Olive Green Anorak Jacket: I searched high and low for the right jacket for this project. It was essential to keep the budget for supplies under $100, and anorak jackets are pricey. I happened to stumble upon this olive green anorak from Target, and to my surprise, it is made so well and under $40. I initially ordered a medium but swapped it for a small. It runs on the larger size (Small size 2-4, Medium 6-8, Large 10-12, XL 12-14, XXL 16-18). If you already have a similar jacket in your closet that could use a little love, it’s also great for this project.

Brown Suede or Leather Lambskin:  For the leather fringe, you have a choice to use suede or leather lambskin. If you use suede, it will have a softer fringe and leather will be a bit stiffer, it’s whatever you prefer. When purchasing a hyde, make sure it is no smaller than 3.5sft.

Rotary Cutter: This little tool is essential to create a perfect fringe.

Clear Ruler: You will need this to create a perfect fringe with your rotary cutter. Don’t use a regular ruler, it’s essential it’s clear, trust me, will make your project SO much more manageable.

Fabric Chalk Pencil: Don’t want to leave any marks when creating that fringe, this is your BFF!

Leather and Suede Glue: If sewing is not in your wheelhouse, not to worry because you can use leather and suede glue. If you prefer to sew, you will not need this.

Leather Sewing Machine Needle & High Strength ThreadIf you have a sewing machine and can stitch a straight line, I highly suggest pulling it out for this project. You will need to make sure you have the correct leather needle and thread, or you won’t get very far.

Custom Nameplate: Personalize your jacket with a custom nameplate. You have up to 20 characters to get creative with a nickname, your name, favorite saying, etc. I went with “Love Saves.”
