It’s that time of year. The days are shorter, the holidays are creeping closer and everyone wakes up with a scratchy throat. What do you call this time of year? FLU SEASON! Unfortunately, flu season is here and as a business owner I began to feel the impact almost immediately. It all started on Monday – it was dark, rainy and cold, aka the perfect storm for employees to call in sick because the weather is taking them down. Don’t let this happen to you!
The other day Zelda and I were picking up a few essentials at Kmart and I noticed they had a pharmacy that offered the flu shot. I decided we should kill two birds with one stone. We were already there, we were close to the toy aisle and it was the perfect time to knock it out. I’m all for bribing those babes. Getting a flu shot is scary and kids deserve to be rewarded. Weekends need to be efficient and this was my chance to do just that. Mamas, we all know we are warriors and need to condense whatever we can.
I recently read a fact from the University of North Carolina that estimated American adults sick the with flu cost the economy 5.8 billion dollars annually. Yes, you read that correctly! I said BILLION with a capitol B! Between medical visits and lost productivity costs, that is a ton of money. I wholeheartedly understand the impact of lost productivity. When you aren’t at work, it impacts everyone and when you’re down at home, it impacts your entire family. This is why it is so important to do whatever you can to keep yourself healthy.
Getting a flu shot is the number one way to avoid contracting the virus. I know, the prospect of getting a shot sounds bad but I promise you can do it! Many of us avoid getting the flu shot because of the inconvenience, time or cost. The CDC estimated that last year less than half of American adults received the flu shot and that less than 60% of children received one. We need to take preventing the flu seriously and the shot itself only takes about one minute.
I told Zelda we were going to get a shot and she immediately freaked out. To ease her temper tantrum, I told her she could pick out a toy before receiving her shot so we headed to the toy aisle, she chose an item and we rolled right on over to the pharmacy. She received her flu shot like a champ and with our insurance plan it cost me ZERO dollars. That’s right, a big fat zero!
When you get your flu shot at Kmart most insurance plans don’t require any co-payment. *Everything is covered! Kmart also offers care beyond the counter, so if you feel like you’re coming down with something the pharmacy team can help you choose the best over the counter healthcare to ease your symptoms. When you’re out this weekend you can get it all done. Stop by Kmart to pick up your essentials and leave vaccinated.
Need a few other tips for flu season?
- Wash your hands! Wash them more than you’ve ever washed them before. Zelda and I set up a reward chart to track her hand washing. Every time she washes she gets to put a sticker on the chart to earn a reward. It makes her excited and I know she is keeping those germs away. It’s a win-win!
- The next tip? If you’re coughing, cover it up. When you’re done coughing, do you know what you should do? Wash your hands!
- Additionally, if you have friends who have been sick or have had sick children, keep them away – now is not the time to have them over. You need to do whatever you can to keep germs out of your house. We all know once one person gets the flu, everyone gets the flu. I don’t know about you but I have better things to do than Lysol every inch of my house. Keeping out germs is always the goal.
- Sleeping and eating well are also key. Sleeping is so important because during the holiday season we all start to go a little bit crazy. And guess what? You’re no use to your family if you aren’t healthy. I hope you have an awesome non-flu season!
*Please note: There is no co-payment unless required by your plan. The cash price of the Trivalent flu shot is $27.99.
