Kim Landi is the owner and founder of ModerneChild, a children’s clothing brand that has so many cute pieces, it’s almost too much for me to handle. You can find Zelda wearing at least one piece from ModerneChild every day, we’re obsessed!

Kim is a mama to two beautiful girls, and has always had a love for fashion. Expressing herself through clothing is something she loves to do, believing that fashion statements can speak louder than words and also brings so much confidence and strength. Those are two things she wants her children to exude each and every day, and hopes to help other children build up their self-confidence through their own individual style. We were so excited to interview Kim and we hope you love her (and ModerneChild) as much as we do!

How many children do you have? What inspired their names?
I have two little girls, Avery Kristine & Alexandra Paige. For Avery, my husband and I went back and forth with so many names and I wanted something different and he wanted something traditional. Avery was the only name we really could agree on. Her middle name is my sister-in-laws name and she was Avery’s godmother, so it made sense.
For Alexandra, we really wanted to have a common boy name for our little girl in hopes that she would have a little edge to her. I wanted a girly girl, but I wanted her to be a little tougher than the average doll. It’s sort of how I feel about myself. I am a girly girl at heart, but I am strong and I can shake things off pretty easily without much of a fuss. So Alexandra was that perfect name since we would be calling her Alex for short. We loved the name Paige so it became her middle name.

What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family?
We love just being at home cuddling around the TV with our dog and snacks in hand. We just like to listen to all the silly things our 3 year old has to say and love when our baby is goo-ing and gah-ing. Honestly, heaven.

Are there any children’s brands you find yourself buying over and over again?
I shop everywhere and that is what led me start ModerneChild. I liked little bits and pieces from different stores, but it was hard for me to buy everything from one place. For every day clothes, I typically shop at baby GAP and Zara Kids. It’s simple, cute and functional.
For the lavish more fun goodies, I do love Joyfolie and TuTu Du Monde. They have beautiful fantasy like clothes, but are a bit of the pricey side. I wanted to find that happy medium because most of us love fashion, but we all can’t afford to pay top dollar on every outfit. Kids clothes are supposed to fun, fashionable and functional, so that is what I strive for in my shoppe.

How has motherhood affected your personal style?
It definitely has mellowed me out for most days. I need flats, trendy denim and easy tops. I still want to look fashionable but a more relaxed version of myself. When my husband and I have the time to go out on date nights and take weekend trips, then the heels and all the fun pieces come out. You definitely can’t lose that side of you. It’s way too fun!

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
Honestly, it’s the need for me that both of them have, but it’s different for each one since they are at different stages in their lives. The 3 year old, Avery, needs me to play and converse with her. She wants me to pay attention to her every move and she wants to “wow” me. It’s so cute, but can get exhausting. Lol. The baby just needs the hugs and kisses and normal nurturing side. I love it all. I didn’t think that motherhood would make me so soft, since as I said, in business and in everyday life, I am a pretty strong cookie, but with them, I melt. I think it makes me dig into the other side of me and it’s truly where I want to be.

What’s the hardest thing about being a mom?
It’s finding enough time in a day to do all the fun things with them that you want to do. My husband and I both work very hard and we work hard so that we can play later with them, but sometimes, we have to try to sit back and enjoy today and we really try. We both studied Business with a concentration in Accounting and Finance so it’s hard to leave that discipline sometimes.

Has your beauty routine changed at all since you’ve had kids?
Yes, everything has to be a lot quicker and low maintenance. Kids take up a lot of time and they don’t have time for you to get dolled up.

What have you learned from your kids?
I have learned to be more patient. Kids can pull you in so many directions at times and they don’t always do as you want. So it’s learning how to communicate with them so they understand and follow what you want them to do. It’s really hard, but we are learning every day.

What is your favorite, easy, go-to recipe that your kids love?
Oh lord, I don’t cook at all. I am horrible at it. My mind goes elsewhere and the kitchen is never one of them. My husband is a really good cook and he loves to do it so he feeds our bellies most nights. Shrimp Linguine is one of my fav dishes my hubby makes! Click here to get the recipe.
