Katie Harrington
Meet Katie Harrington, mom to son Gavin, who’s just turned four! We met Katie when she was working at the wonderland that is The Land of Nod, rocking their social media. This Chicago girl has recently made the jump out west to Los Angeles to start her new gig at beloved kids brand Munchkin, as their Senior Social Media and Public Relations Manager. When she’s not at the office, she spends her time exploring her new turf with her son, and soaking up that Cali sun!
How many children do you have? What inspired their names?
My son Gavin recently turned four years old. My family celebrates our Irish heritage, and I knew I wanted something to represent the culture. The Gaelic meaning of Gavin is “Hawk.”
What’s your favorite way to spend time with your family?
We recently moved from my hometown of Chicago to Los Angeles and have been busy exploring many of the neighborhoods around the city. Lately our weekends have consisted of mini trips to cities like Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, and Hermosa Beach. It seems as though we just can’t get enough of the perpetual sunshine and great outdoors! Gavin adores the beaches, zoos, and seasonal fare at local farmers’ markets. If we’re not planning our next adventure, we’ve connected with a wonderful group of friends and spend a lot of time on play dates with the kids.
Are there any children’s brands you find yourself buying over and over again?
I like to describe Gavin’s style as “West Coast preppy.” I love to combine classic staples like Crew Cuts, and mix them with the more bold/graphic pieces from Ezra + Eli, Young One Apparel, June & January, and Mini Boden.
How has motherhood affected your personal style?
I wouldn’t say that motherhood has really affected my personal style too much. When it comes to style, I tend to be a creature of habit. My wardrobe seems to consist of stripes, chambray, classic colors, and a good set of pearls. Perhaps the major difference is styling my hair. Although I still pay an arm and a leg to get my hair done, I throw it up in a ponytail six days out of seven. Oh, what I would give to stop at Dry Bar on my way into the office!
What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
I get so emotional thinking about this question because there’s just nothing else like being a mom. I love the pride I feel for Gavin — it’s this beautifully overwhelming emotion that can stop me dead in my tracks. I love watching him grow and discover life. There are certain basic values that I strive to live by everyday and it’s such a wonderful experience to be given the chance to teach Gavin kindness, gratitude, and acceptance.
What’s the hardest thing about being a mom?
At times I think it’s the balancing act of being a full-time working mom, and other times I feel that it’s the pressure of not folding to what can be the judgmental world of social media. I work in the parenting social media/public relations space and constantly come across the next big movement, or op-eds, or petitions adding fuel to the “mommy wars” fires. At the end of the day, I find that I have to remind myself that I’m doing the best that I can for my family and making the right decisions to help shape Gavin’s future for the better, all the while not casting judgment on other parents for that same reason.
Has your beauty routine changed at all since you’ve had kids?
Definitely – I used to never leave the house without makeup, and that has drastically changed! For the last four years, my morning routine has been so rushed between getting breakfast ready, daycare drop off, arriving at work on time, etc., that I’m truly grateful that I’ve managed to make a cup of coffee before heading out the door. Rather than a full face of makeup, I’ve been getting by with a few basics: Eye Brightener and a Shu Uemura Eye Lash Curler (the only one I use – obsessed!).
What have you learned from your kids?
To not take things so seriously and smile at the small stuff. Watching Gavin discover life has given me a new appreciation for imagination and curiosity.
What is your favorite, easy, go-to recipe that your kid(s) love?
We buy a lot of our groceries at local farmers’ markets and Gavin loves help pick out ingredients to make a yogurt parfait. It’s packed with protein and a makes for a healthy breakfast or an afternoon snack — get the recipe here.
