Homemade Candy Hearts are a fun and delicious alternative to buying them in the store! To make them you need ¾ teaspoon powdered gelatin, ¼ cup clear soda (we used Sprite), 3 12 cups powdered sugar, food coloring, and peppermint extract. In a mixing bowl, combine the soda and the powdered gelatin. Allow the gelatin to dissolve in the soda for approximately 5 minutes. Next, microwave on high for approximately 30 seconds (this will melt the gelatin completely so that you can’t see any granules). Using a hand mixer, slowly add in the powdered sugar ¼ cup at a time. Continue adding the powdered sugar until you have a stiff dough, it’s okay if it is a little sticky (if it’s too sticky don’t be afraid to add more powdered sugar). Dust more powdered sugar on a clean surface and roll out the dough. Cut the dough into sections, depending on how many colors you are going to use. Sprinkle the dough with the food coloring of your choice and the peppermint extract. Knead in the colors and peppermint extract until combined. Roll out the dough, so that it is approximately ¼ inch thick, and cut out the shapes using mini heart cookie cutters. Once the shapes are cut out, place the hearts on a piece of parchment paper and allow them to dry for 48 hours (flipping them over occasionally). Eat them alone or use them to garnish your favorite Valentine’s Day cupcakes!
