Mamas, you know how difficult it is to get your babe to brush their teeth. When you enter that bathroom it’s basically like you’re going in to try and wrestle an alligator, while blindfolded. Having a feeling that these endeavors were very likely as unproductive as I thought they were, one night I stayed up late to do my due diligence as a mom, crawling deeper and deeper into the web filling my brain with terrifying articles. Half an hour later I sat in bed, scared shitless. I looked over at Zelda, who was sleeping peacefully and knew we had to get it together.
This time around something good came out of my late night freak out. I came across a highly informative article from Parents Magazine that helped put things into perspective. The majority of kids get cavities, and that number only increases as they get older. The article from Parents referenced the CDC, which states that 11 percent of kids Zelda’s age get cavities. It nearly doubles when they turn three, and by the time they are five it hits 44 percent. That is insane. Cue the breathing exercises ladies.
That wasn’t the only helpful thing I found that night. I found a toothpaste that turns your mouth blue, highlighting the areas with plaque buildup. No more blindfold and that alligator is temporarily distracted! Thanks to Plaque HD Toothpaste, not only did I know exactly where I needed to focus on brushing Zelda’s teeth, but she was actually into it because it turned her mouth blue. From a kids’ perspective, flavor is probably the most important factor on whether or not a toothpaste gets used or squirted all over the walls. This one comes in mint and bubblegum, and not surprisingly Zelda was a big fan of the bubblegum. Our tube is still in tact next to the sink, further solidifying its status as a hit. She patiently sat, watched and let me brush until the blue disappeared, and there was not a tear in sight. Plaque is here to stay.
The other piece of the puzzle is a great toothbrush. I discovered the Issa Mikro which is geared toward babes ages 0-4 years old. Don’t be fooled, taking care of their teeth at this age is just as important as when they grow older. I love that it’s gentle and comes in fun colors, and Zelda absolutely FLIPPED over it. That’s the part that I love the most about the Mikro, I want her to be into this as it’s easier for all of us! Honestly she probably would have brushed her teeth for an hour if I’d let her and I’m okay with that.
I’m so glad we found all of this out now, and not when it became a problem. Facing it head on gave me the knowledge I needed and the products to do all. I can help Zelda establish good habits, which last a lifetime.
